We’re very metrics-focused here at Mojave. We’re also a very diverse group of people, each of us hailing from different cities around the country.
When you combine these two traits, its inevitable that hometown battles are bound to rise and some type of evidence will be brought to the table.
After hours of arguing over which city flaunted the best interactive-social-media-centric internet image, we decided to rank them based on the Mojave Social Media scoring model. Here are the results:
We looked at seven cities: San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin, Seattle, and Boston
Their use and integration of Social Media in several key areas: Official City & City Visitors Bureau websites, Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, and any additional City-run Social Media initiatives
They are judged on 4 levels of performance: Presence, Integration, Engagement, and Buzz
Highest score overall wins bragging rights for “The Most Social City on the Internet”.
After a lot of tossing back and forth, the numbers came through. Here are the final rankings:

Here’s how we came to conclusions.
We started with the blogosphere:
Los Angeles was high on the radar with the news of Michael Jackson’s death but interestingly enough followed very closely by the banters of Chicago. New York City’s numbers are depressing, considering that its the most populated city on the list. I guess they make up for it on Facebook.

There are approximately 865,000 fans of New York City on Facebook. They’re in the lead by almost 300%! Now Twitter,
The city of Boston didn’t have an official Twitter account, so we looked to the Boston police department who started an account so that citizens could report on all the local crime going down. This initiative has been blogged and talked about, respectively, as it is a wonderful example of the creative ways Social Media is being used to change the world. Too bad that this alone wasn’t enough for them to win.
Next we looked at sentiment. Surprisingly, negativity was shunned to a miniscule percentage, with negative feelings for all of these cities were under 5%.
Judging by the numbers, it looks like Boston is the internet favorite; with 21% of posts having favorable connotations However, Boston also had the highest amount of negative mentions at 5%. Looks like people have a love-hate relationship with this town. We can’t imagine why
. This next chart looks deeper into the profiling of the posters (users).
Unique posters are approximate amount of users, from a given week, who are creating dialogue about each city in Social Media. Passionate posters are individuals who are likely to repeatedly talk about the topic. San Francisco proves to have the highest ratio of Unique to Passionate. Could it be true? Is I <3 NY still running hard? Or did SF-loyalists steal their thunder? What about Boston? Every town deserves some love.
