THE REAL HOUSEWIVES: SOCIAL MEDIA MATCHUP

by Almitra | Permalink | Comments (0)

It seems like every time I turn on the TV, grab a magazine at the grocery store, or pull up a celebrity blog “The Real Housewives” are in the headlines. If you’re not familiar with the RHW, here’s a quick summary:

“The Real Housewives” is a reality series that runs on the Bravo TV Network. It follows a group of wealthy women who are living their lives in suburban areas of the United States. The Real Housewives of Orange County premiered first in 2006 and the show has since then expanded to include women from New York City, Atlanta, and most recently, New Jersey (which has just completed airing its first season).

Although we normally look at how companies and brands are competing in the social space, we thought it might be interesting to look at the ladies of Orange County, New York City, Atlanta and New Jersey. We ran some numbers, gathered some data and came upon some interesting results (click on the graphs for a larger view).

The Atlanta housewives seem to be stirring up the most overall conversations in Social Media, with Orange County following close behind. Although New Jersey has only aired one season, they appear to be just as popular as the other three. Hopefully we’ll see them back for season 2!

In the blog world, The New Jersey ladies stirred up some talk when crazy news about mafia affiliation and a “book” surfaced about one of the housewives. The reunion shows aired after the season itself ended, and was eagerly awaited by viewers. The enthusiasm is shown in the graph. Other notable surges in activity concern the women of New York City, who tend to get themselves in the press even when the show isn’t running.real housewives-blog-vs-twitter

We all know that Twitter has recently received a surge in users and activity. Could Twitter’s boost be attributed to Atlanta’s season 2 premiere? Probably not, but it sure is helping as RHW Social Media users are flocking to post their 140 character bashes on Kim, Nene, Lisa, Sheree, and the newest addition to this season of ATL RHW, Kandi. real housewives-sentiment

So where the haters at? The sentiment analysis came in REALLY close, but it looks like the New Jersey crew ignites the most fire in viewers. This could be due to the fact that they’re new and have to undergo criticism from loyal OC, NYC, and ATL fans. At least that’s what I keep telling myself ;-) . Orange County housewives lovers are probably questioning our results right about now as they don’t seem to be making waves in Social Media as much as the others are. Well, OC fans, sorry to say, rumors of Gretchen cheating on her late fiance Jeff didn’t intrigue people enough for them to get online and blog nearly as much as Dina and Danielle’s vicious attacks on each other, or news of Lisa’s home foreclosure did. real housewives-share-of-space

Looking at a collection of all the Social Media referring to the shows, NYC takes the pie with having the highest percentage of mentions, followed very closely by the brand-spankin’ new New Jersey housewives. Atlanta is steadily gaining momentum as season 2 is only midway through, there’s a possibility that last week’s appearance by r&b singer T-Boz (from TLC) could possibly spike the conversations. Stay tuned to see what happens to the Real Housewives next week!
